Renée Robitaille et l’art du conte : Hommes de pioche

À mi-chemin entre l’oral et l’écrit se trouve l’art du conte. Renée Robitaille a trouvé là une façon de raconter à sa façon l’expérience des mineurs des mines d’or de l’Abitibi et de leurs proches. Basé sur une série d’entrevues et autres ouvrages de référence, Hommes de pioche raconte l’histoire d’une génération de mineurs bravant les dangers du travail sous terre et ce faisant, créant une communauté et une histoire haute en couleur. Renée raconte à son fils Arthur l’histoire de divers personnage et en bâtissant le conte, retrouve ses racines en Abitibi. C’est une joie à lire, et à écouter… car le livre se vend avec le CD d’un enregistrement live d’un spectacle de Renée Robitaille.

Telling tales is a mixture of the oral and the written… often much closer to oral transmission. Renée Robitaille is a Québec artist who writes stories and tells them on stage. She has chosen to tell the story of gold miners in Abitibi, a region of Québec where she has her roots. Based on a series of interviews as well as the consultation of a variety of written sources, Hommes de pioche (or Pick-Ax Men) tells the story of a generation of miners braving the dangers of underground mining and creating a colourful community and history. Renée tells her son Arthur the story of various characters and through building this tale, recovers her own roots deep in the Abitibi soil. It is a joy to read, and to listen to… the book is sold with a live recording of the show.
